Hardware is judged by cycle life

Architectural hardware is bought on appearance and judged on durability. A handle is touched thousands of times a year, a hinge carries a door's weight through every opening, and a lock is operated continuously for decades. The properties that determine whether hardware survives that - material, mechanism quality, bearing design, spring quality and finish adhesion - are invisible in a product photograph, which is why cheap hardware looks identical to good hardware on arrival and entirely different after two years.

The buyers are typically hardware distributors and importers, project and contract buyers supplying construction, furniture and joinery manufacturers, and retail and trade-counter operators. Project buyers need coordinated suites with specification compliance; distributors need range breadth with consistent availability; furniture manufacturers need dimensional consistency and cycle life. The right product differs, and so does the documentation.

Materials and construction quality

Material determines both durability and cost, and the differences are substantial. Stainless steel in austenitic grades is the standard for external and heavy-duty applications, with 316-type material preferred for coastal and marine exposure and 304-type adequate inland. Solid brass offers excellent machinability, natural corrosion resistance and a traditional appearance, and it takes a wide range of finishes well. Zinc alloy die casting allows complex shapes at low cost and is the mainstream material for handles and decorative hardware, but it is softer and less durable. Aluminium is used for window hardware and lightweight applications.

Construction quality within a material is what separates products at similar price points. On a hinge, the difference is in the knuckle fit, the pin material and retention, whether bearings are fitted and of what type, and the leaf thickness. On a lock, it is in the case material and thickness, the latch and bolt material and throw, the spring quality, the lever mechanism and whether the internal components are stamped or machined. We inspect these features because they determine service life and none of them appear in a catalogue photograph.

Solid versus hollow and plated versus solid construction is disclosed in our quotations. A brass-plated zinc handle and a solid brass handle look identical when new and cost very differently, and both are legitimate products for different price positions. What is not legitimate is selling one as the other, so we state the actual construction and material and we test for it where the specification matters.

Load and dimensional verification is carried out against the application. Hinges are verified against door weight and size ratings with the number of hinges specified for the leaf; locks are checked for backset, case size, spindle and cylinder dimensions and handing; closers are matched to door width, weight and the required closing force class. Hardware that is dimensionally incompatible with the door it is fitted to is a common and entirely avoidable project problem.

Finishes and corrosion performance

Finish is the most visible aspect of hardware and the most common source of complaint, because a finish that fails looks worse than no finish at all. Available finishes include satin and mirror-polished stainless steel, polished and satin chrome, satin and polished nickel, antique and aged brass, polished brass and lacquered brass, matt and satin black, bronze and oil-rubbed bronze, brushed and polished gold, rose gold and copper, and powder-coated colours to RAL reference.

Physical vapour deposition, known as PVD, deserves separate mention because it is genuinely different from plating. A PVD finish is a hard, thin ceramic-metal layer deposited in a vacuum chamber, and its abrasion and tarnish resistance are far superior to conventional electroplating. It costs more and it is the right specification for high-traffic commercial applications and for gold and rose-gold finishes, which tarnish and wear quickly in plated form. We recommend it where the application justifies it rather than as an upsell on every item.

Finish durability is tested rather than claimed. Neutral salt-spray testing to a stated hour rating verifies corrosion resistance, adhesion testing verifies that the coating is bonded, abrasion and rub testing verifies wear resistance on handled surfaces, and where relevant we test resistance to cleaning chemicals and to perspiration, which is a real failure mechanism on handles. For external and coastal projects, salt-spray evidence on the production lot is worth insisting on.

Finish consistency across a project is a practical problem that gets overlooked. Handles, hinges, locks, closers and accessories from different production runs and different component suppliers can vary noticeably in a nominally identical finish, and the variation is obvious when they are fitted to the same door. For project supply we control this by sourcing a suite from a coordinated production run, approving a physical finish standard, and comparing all items against it before shipment.

Performance testing and certification

Serious hardware is tested to performance standards, and the tests measure exactly what matters. Locks and latches are cycle tested to a stated number of operations, commonly in the hundreds of thousands for commercial grades, along with torque testing on handles and spindles, bolt strength and security testing, and where relevant drilling, picking and manipulation resistance. Hinges are cycle tested under load with the door weight applied. Door closers are cycle tested and their closing force class and adjustment range verified.

Where a project specification names a standard - a European EN standard for locks, hinges or closers, an ANSI or BHMA grade, or a national building code requirement - we route production to a manufacturer holding that certification and supply the certificate. It is important to distinguish a certified product from a product that resembles a certified one, and we state clearly which we are offering. Where certification is not available for a product at a target price, we say so rather than implying compliance.

Fire door hardware is a specific and serious case. Hardware fitted to a fire door must be tested as part of a fire-rated assembly, and hinges, locks, closers and intumescent details all form part of that rating. A product cannot be described as fire rated on its own; it is the assembly that is rated. Where a buyer is supplying fire doors, we work only with manufacturers holding valid fire-test evidence for the relevant configuration, and we will decline to supply uncertified hardware for a fire-rated application.

Panic and emergency exit hardware is treated the same way. It is life-safety equipment governed by specific standards covering operating force, unlatching under load, and reliability, and it must be certified. We supply certified product with test evidence or we do not supply it, because the consequence of an uncertified panic bar failing is not a commercial one.

Keying, suiting and project coordination

For any project with more than a handful of doors, keying is the part of the specification that causes the most trouble if it is not planned. We supply keyed-alike sets where several locks share one key, master-keyed suites where individual keys operate their own door and a master operates all, grand-master and multi-level hierarchies for larger buildings, and construction keying that allows a temporary key during the build to be permanently voided at handover.

A keying schedule has to be prepared before manufacture, listing every door, its lock type, its key group and its position in the hierarchy. We work from your schedule or help you build one from the door schedule. Locks are then manufactured and labelled per door reference so they can be installed correctly, and key bitting records are retained securely so future extensions to the suite are possible. Getting cylinders on site without a schedule and trying to sort keying afterwards is expensive and often ends in replacement.

Hardware suiting extends beyond keys. A coordinated project suite means handles, hinges, locks, closers, flush bolts, door stops, kick plates, signage and accessories in a matching finish and design family, specified per door type. We can supply a door-by-door hardware schedule from your door schedule, packed and labelled per door or per floor so installation is straightforward. Buyers frequently underestimate how much site time this saves.

Furniture and cabinet hardware

Furniture hardware is a distinct segment with its own priorities: dimensional precision, smooth operation, cycle life and consistency across a production run. We supply concealed and clip-on hinges with adjustment and soft-close options, drawer slides in ball-bearing, roller, undermount and tandem types with soft-close and push-to-open functions, lift and flap-stay systems, knobs, pulls and edge profiles, cabinet locks, legs and levellers, and connecting and assembly fittings.

For furniture manufacturers, consistency is more important than any single item's specification. A drawer slide that varies by a millimetre between production lots produces drawer fronts that do not align, and that becomes a visible defect across a whole production batch. We hold approved samples, verify dimensional consistency lot to lot, and keep manufacturers fixed rather than moving between sources on price, because a source change on furniture hardware is a change to the furniture.

Cycle life on furniture hardware is tested and it matters commercially, since a failed soft-close hinge on a kitchen is a warranty callout. Hinges and slides are cycle tested to a stated count with the rated load applied, soft-close damper performance is verified after cycling rather than only when new, and load ratings on slides are checked against the actual drawer weight rather than accepted from a catalogue.

Packaging, presentation and documentation

Hardware packaging serves two purposes: protecting a finish that is the product's main value, and presenting it for sale. Finished items are individually bagged or tissue-wrapped to prevent contact marking, packed with screws and fixings included, and boxed with fitting instructions and templates where relevant. Retail packaging is produced to your artwork with barcodes, multilingual labelling and shelf-ready or hanging presentation.

Fixings included with hardware are worth specifying rather than leaving to the manufacturer. Screws supplied with a handle should match its finish and be of adequate length and material for the substrate, and a stainless-steel handle supplied with plain steel screws will show rust streaks within a season in an external application. We specify matched fixings, and we point it out when a buyer's cost target is being met by downgrading them.

Documentation supplied with shipments includes commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, material and finish test reports where specified, performance and cycle test certificates, fire-test evidence where applicable, keying schedules and key bitting records for keyed suites, and fitting instructions. For project supply, a door-by-door schedule cross-referenced to the packing is supplied so the installer can find the right item without opening every carton.

What is PVD and is it worth the extra cost?

PVD is a hard ceramic-metal layer deposited in a vacuum chamber, with far better abrasion and tarnish resistance than conventional electroplating. It is worth it for high-traffic commercial applications and for gold and rose-gold finishes, which wear and tarnish quickly when plated. For a low-traffic interior in a common finish, plating is usually adequate, and we say so rather than recommending PVD on everything.

Can a single item be fire rated?

No. Fire ratings apply to a complete door assembly, and hinges, locks, closers and intumescent details all form part of it. A product cannot be described as fire rated on its own. Where you are supplying fire doors, we work only with manufacturers holding valid fire-test evidence for the relevant configuration, and we will decline to supply uncertified hardware for a fire-rated application.

How do I keep finishes consistent across a project?

By sourcing the suite from a coordinated production run, approving a physical finish standard, and comparing every item against it before shipment. Nominally identical finishes vary noticeably between production runs and component suppliers, and the variation is obvious when handle, hinge, lock and closer are fitted to the same door. It has to be controlled before shipping, not after.

When does keying need to be planned?

Before manufacture. A keying schedule listing every door, its lock type, key group and position in the hierarchy has to exist before cylinders are made. Locks are then manufactured and labelled per door reference, and key bitting records are retained so the suite can be extended later. Sorting keying after cylinders arrive on site is expensive and often ends in replacement.

How can I tell solid brass from brass-plated zinc?

Not from a photograph, which is exactly the problem. Both are legitimate products at different price positions, but they should not be sold as each other. We state the actual construction and material in our quotations and test for it where the specification matters. Weight, sound and machining detail are the practical indicators, and we will show you both if you are choosing on price.
